John Mann was elected as Labour Member of Parliament for Bassetlaw in June 2001.
He is very much a “hands-on” Member of Parliament getting involved in issues that directly affect the day to day lives of his constituents. The campaigns and the issues that he has raised in Parliament are in direct response to concerns that have been raised by Bassetlaw residents. This has led to John running high profile campaigns on consumer debt, heroin and treatment for addiction, the over zealous staking of grave stones and the double charging by solicitors for miner compensation claims. In 2003 he ran a successful campaign to keep Bassetlaw Hospital A&E open and in 2006 he won the campaign to stop Bassetlaw Primary Care Trust from being merged into a wider county-wide primary care trust.
John has been Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Minister for the Olympics: Tessa Jowell and Richard Caborn, then Minister for Sport. He has also served on the influential Treasury Select Committee where he led the campaign for more transparency in the consumer credit industry.
Before entering Parliament he worked for the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers (AEEU), the TUC and TULO. He is a former Chair of Labour Students and just prior to his election he was involved in running the family business.
Since 2005 he has been Chair of the Parliamentary Committee Against Antisemitism and commissioned the All-Party Parliamentary Inquiry into Antisemitism.
British Jobs for British Workers
On Tuesday John Mann MP presented a Ten-Minute Rule Bill on the Commons floor seeking legal guarantees that major public works contract holders employ British workers.
John Mann is pushing the Bill in response to contractors who have employed cheap agency foreign workers who undercut the salary costs of UK-based workers.
The demonstrations and strikes at Lindsey Oil Refinery and Staythorpe Power Station last year highlighted this issue where British workers were being laid off in favour of low cost labour being imported from overseas.
John is proposing a guarantee built into government contracts that contractors provide new apprenticeships and skills re-training in partnership with local colleges in order to increase the skills levels of the local workforce.
The Bill also requires all major contract jobs to be advertised at the local job centre.
Commenting on the Bill John Mann said "this is a Bill that will change the attitude of some of our major building firms and ensure that they employ British-based workers rather than import low-skilled low cost workers from elsewhere. This is about tackling unemployment and ensuring that this country has a strong skills base."
He added "The bill will also improve the competitiveness of British based companies
